My Education and Teaching/Professional Background

I have Bachelor's of Arts degree in Elementary Education from the University of St. Thomas. I began my teaching career at Friends School of Minnesota, a progressive Quaker school, where I taught grades 1-4. I worked at Friends School for 15 years. Since moving to Los Angeles, I taught third grade at The Oaks School in Hollywood and have been teaching second/third grade at Walden for seven years.

Year I Started at Walden

2014.

I am a Progressive Educator Because ...

I believe in the importance of community and teaching kids the skills to be active and productive community members. Progressive education empowers children to think deeply, to hope, and to be the change they want to see in their community and in the world.

What I Love About Walden

I love so many things about Walden, and one of them is the material rich classrooms - math manipulatives, all kinds of artistic mediums, blocks, books, plants, objects from the natural world. The list could go on and on! All of these materials allow children to express themselves and their learning in a variety of ways, and help make abstract concepts more concrete.

My Favorite Walden Tradition

My favorite Walden tradition is the third grade camping trip to Joshua Tree. It's wonderful to spend three days in nature hiking, rock climbing, and learning about the desert with my students. It's great bonding experience!

Best Teaching Moment

Some of my favorite teaching moments have been taking my classes on field trips and exposing them to new learning and experiences outside the classroom. Favorite field trips include the LA River, Griffith Park, and the beach!

Professional Development

I have spent lots of time reading and studying the Reggio Emilia approach to teaching and learning. It has been the biggest inspiration for the way I teach and view children. It has had a huge impact on who am as a teacher.

My Joy

I love to hike with my husband and dogs. I am a nature lover and spend as much time as I can outside! I also love to travel and try new food.
