Dear Walden Families,

Greetings from San Clemente where I am camping with the Ponderers! Watching the co-leadership of the teachers and the sixth grade Pearly Mussels highlights the transformation that takes place on this annual trip.

At Walden, we're seeing leadership development as a process for all, and not just an isolated event. Rites of passage like the Ponderers' camping trip provide capacity-building for our students to move from being a fourth grade participant learning from a peer to a sixth grade small group activity and tent leader. They help with planning the trip, remain flexible with changes, and are tasked with demonstrating empathy and support in real time to those that will ultimately replace them. They take it pretty seriously and can be an inspiration to us all. These are clearly the skills needed to challenge the status quo. The Ponderers will return from this adventure on Friday afternoon.

Next Tuesday, Walden Equity will welcome Jason David, co-founder of the Alliance of White Anti-Racists Everywhere Los Angeles (AWARE-LA), to talk to us about having conversations about race with our children. This is an event that will help support the conversations that students are having in classrooms around this important topic and as the first W.E. event of the year, I hope you will make it a priority to attend.

On Wednesday, our Specialty Core will host their informational and enjoyable Back-to-School Night. If you've ever had a moment where you have wished to take an art class with Ben, play music with Alejandro, or learn about Carolyn's passion and knowledge of books that are new and notable, you won't want to miss this evening.

Child care will be provided with RSVP for both evenings.

Have a lovely weekend,

Terra
